What makes great teaching?

Below are some of my top 5 strategies that were used this semester:    1. Blackout poem. This strategy I found to be very fun because it can also be used with students of most ages. In blocking out words and bringing to light some of the words that stood out to you the most is a great way to see each students view and what stood out to them. When reading others blackout poems I had a fun time doing it because it looked different than mine and it made me realize that the words they highlighted were important too! 2. Social media. This method I found to be the most engaging just because it is connecting with our pop culture and this is something that us as students are most connected to these days such as tiktok, youtube and other platforms. Social media also opens a lot of doors to new perspectives, new ways of going about a certain thing and just ideas that can be used in classroom which is why it made my top 5 list.  3. Reading and writing poetry. This made it to my top ...

Its 2022, why are schools still segregated?

Image
If I had read this question before working on this week's lesson about schools being segregated to this day the first thing that would have popped into my mind would have been "I thought schools were not segregated anymore? Thats something of the past." However, after reading and listening to the multiple videos covering the problems that our educational system and our society face it is very obvious how we still have a lot of work that needs to be accomplished to say that schools are no longer segregated !        Something worth mentioning that was covered in the YouTube video “The Disturbing History of the suburbs” was the practice that occurred here in the United States brought with the New Deal called “Redlining.” This is something that I found to be shocking as this practice was only created to better support white people with no consideration of other races living in the United S tates. This practice consisted of having banks color a ne...

What does money really have to do with it?

Image
In schools, money will always have an impact on a child's education and resources. The school can have a little bit of funding or it can have a whole lot but it regardless of how much money is provided both circumstances will greatly impact a child's educational experience and perhaps a teachers as well. It is pretty evident that schools that have more funding are considered the "rich" schools as they have a higher budget for things meaning they are able to provide students with more resources to have a better education. For example, at a school that I went to substitute for every single classroom had chromebooks for every student, a tv screen and a smart magic touch board almost similar to a white board. This school also had a behavior specialist on site and a very big library. For students attending a school like this have more opportunities to learn as they are exposed to different resources such as technology and with technology the opportunities to learn are end...

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

Image
In my WORDitOut creation as seen below, I have chosen some of the main elements of what it takes to be a culturally responsive teacher as well as some other strategies that I saw being implemented through the articles and videos that we had to watch. One of the most important phrases that I would first like to point out of what it takes to teach young ones is making sure that as a teacher you show genuine and authentic care to your students especially to those who do not look like you! It is crucial that teachers show that they care for a student and are happy to be present as this will help create that safe environment and that bond with one another to lay the foundation of what is to come. With this, teachers must remember to always be advocates for their students, speak up for them and fight for their future as we have the power to do so in many different ways. I also included the word games in my WORDitOut creation because a great strategy to get ALL of your students to participat...

How Does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?

Image
This question is a tough one, especially because there are a lot of ways in which gender is seen to impact a teaching profession. To start off, when we think of teachers especially elementary school teachers we think of women because majority of teachers are women. In fact, 76% of teachers are women and the rest of the percentage are male. Could this be the reason on why teachers across the United States are underpaid and underappreciated? I know we have come a very long way if we compare where we are now to the progress that was made back then where women were not even allowed to work in the first place because they were seen as the weaker gender or if they did they were not paid enough. However, we still have a lot to work on to close down that pay gap between men and women as it is seen for men to be paid more than women even if they are doing the exact same job.  Gender not only affects the teaching profession but as well as many other jobs! We have seen how gender is eve...

Is Schooling Equitable?

Image
The short and simple answer to this question is no. In my opinion, I do not feel like schooling is equitable just because we have a very large achievement gap and a disparity of academic performance between a  prominent groups of students. These groups of students who are mostly getting affected are those who come from a low income families, minority students and students of color. If the achievement gap was not so wide and getting larger I would have a change in opinion on whether schooling is equitable. The only way that the achievement gap were to close or be more narrow is if ALL students were to be provided with the adequate amount of resources and support they need in order to fully reach success, then in that case schooling we be equitable.  I feel like several people often get the two terms equality and equity confused when they are both two completely different things. Equality in education is seen when all students regardless of who they are or where they came ...

Stories: Whose are told and whose remain in the margins?

Image
In order to fully understand and answer this question, I believe that it is important to first cover what marginalization is and when it occurs. Marginalization is when someone feels like they are not valued, things they are able to access and opportunities given are very limited and hard to reach and overall struggle to get equal with certain things. Groups who are more prone to being marginalized are minority groups, females, people of color and groups who pertain to the lgbt community.  These groups are more likely to struggle, have more barriers and overall have to work harder in doing many things and will often get discriminated along the way. Marginalization can be seen or done everywhere, some of the most common places include work, school, social media and even when out in public. As an example, in a classroom a teacher could have a deaf African American student and because of her skin complexion and her disability students can easily make her feel left out of made fu...
