What makes great teaching?
Below are some of my top 5 strategies that were used this semester:
1. Blackout poem. This strategy I found to be very fun because it can also be used with students of most ages. In blocking out words and bringing to light some of the words that stood out to you the most is a great way to see each students view and what stood out to them. When reading others blackout poems I had a fun time doing it because it looked different than mine and it made me realize that the words they highlighted were important too!
2. Social media. This method I found to be the most engaging just because it is connecting with our pop culture and this is something that us as students are most connected to these days such as tiktok, youtube and other platforms. Social media also opens a lot of doors to new perspectives, new ways of going about a certain thing and just ideas that can be used in classroom which is why it made my top 5 list.
3. Reading and writing poetry. This made it to my top five because although it is something that its done in several of my classes I do believe it is beneficial to change up the style of writing from just short answers, essays or responses because it makes you really think on how to construct a poem to make it sound cohesive and when reading other poems it gives you an insight of what they were feeling or thinking when they wrote it, it just holds a lot of significance.
4. What I wonder about. I chose this strategy because it is a strategy that I see myself implying with my future classroom. This allows students the opportunity to reflect back on what they learned and write on some things in which they wonder about, I found this to be very helpful when doing the module.
5. Lastly Selecting golden lines. This is also one of my favorite things that we did this semester because it was something unique and something that I hadn't used before in my other classes so I was very engaged in doing it. It also helped me look back at the video or reading by reading my golden lines which were phrases or sentences that stood out to me. Also, this is a great activity that can be done with elementary school students with any reading or video that is being taught as well!
