Is Schooling Equitable?

The short and simple answer to this question is no. In my opinion, I do not feel like schooling is equitable just because we have a very large achievement gap and a disparity of academic performance between a  prominent groups of students. These groups of students who are mostly getting affected are those who come from a low income families, minority students and students of color. If the achievement gap was not so wide and getting larger I would have a change in opinion on whether schooling is equitable. The only way that the achievement gap were to close or be more narrow is if ALL students were to be provided with the adequate amount of resources and support they need in order to fully reach success, then in that case schooling we be equitable.

I feel like several people often get the two terms equality and equity confused when they are both two completely different things. Equality in education is seen when all students regardless of who they are or where they came from all are treated the same and given the exact same resources. This is what I feel like I see schools mostly focus on, equality, which at some extent is great however, in education it is evidently seen that not at students are the same. As mentioned earlier, students who are affected by the achievement gap are minority students and those who come from a low income families they have a lot more challenges to overcome and usually face more hardships than a student who is white and comes from a middle to upper class family. For this reason, is why schools should provide even more support and resources to these students in order to succeed which is also known as equity. These groups who are affected cannot succeed with the same resources provided to a student who does not face these hardships! Schools need to prepare and individually address the need for each of these students to set the up for success.

  1. Hey Ana, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading your post! I really liked that you talked about equity and equality and provided their definitions. I see how a lot of schools are more focused on equality, when everyone is different and the same resources and help is not enough for every student. I also think schooling isn't equitable and there's so many factors to why that isn't that easy to change: school funding, teachers pay/ certifications/ poverty, achievement gaps/ school resources/materials. How would you make your classroom more equitable?
