Its 2022, why are schools still segregated?

If I had read this question before working on this week's lesson about schools being segregated to this day the first thing that would have popped into my mind would have been "I thought schools were not segregated anymore? Thats something of the past." However, after reading and listening to the multiple videos covering the problems that our educational system and our society face it is very obvious how we still have a lot of work that needs to be accomplished to say that schools are no longer segregated!

Something worth mentioning that was covered in the YouTube video “The Disturbing History of the suburbs” was the practice that occurred here in the United States brought with the New Deal called “Redlining.” This is something that I found to be shocking as this practice was only created to better support white people with no consideration of other races living in the United States. This practice consisted of having banks color a neighborhood red to represent the area as a “risky investment” in order to limit or to deny the chances of someone living in the red neighborhood access to services like loans or financing services. Neighborhood's that lived in the green areas were benefited by this deal as this was the area that banks were most interested in. As a result, we started seeing this program as discriminatory as it was attacking certain race groups such as African Americans and Latinos since they lived in the red areas. This made it harder for them to succeed in life as they often lived in poverty and had little to no support from banks due to the area that they were living in.

To this day, I feel like it still has lingering effects to our students as we still see a large education inequality gap which is why our schools are still segregated as Black and Hispanic students' achievement is significantly less when compared to a White student.
